Some movie reviews: This week I rented Daybreakers on Netflix: General Synopsis:Daybreakers is a 2009 film whose plot involves a plague that breaks out on Earth and transforms humans (and it seems some animals too) into Vampires. The problem with a society made up of almost all vampires is that what do vampires feed on? Human blood of course and if there aren’t any humans how do they eat? The entire society, including the government, is comprised of all vampires and they are quite concerned as to what to do with the shortage of blood situation. Edward Dalton (played by Ethan Hawke) is a hematologist that works for the major company that sells and distributes blood to the vampire population. Dr. Dalton is charged with finding a solution to the blood shortage problem by developing a synthetic blood product while the few humans that still exist are hunted down and captured by the army. Once captured, the humans are harvest for their blood which the company in turn sells to the vampire population. With the army finding fewer and fewer humans the government begins rationing blood. They discover that vampires who do not get enough blood begin transforming into monstrous creatures that look somewhat like a human / bat hybrid. These creatures do not seem sentient any longer and feed on other vampires including themselves. Dr. Dalton is sympathetic to humans and we later find out he really did not want to become a vampire but was turned against his will. Later Dalton comes across a community of humans, one of which claims to have been a vampire (played by Willem Dafoe) who became human again. Working with this “cured” vampire, Dalton finds a cure to turn the vampire population back to humans but the question is, do the vampires want to be “cured”? Review: I was pleasantly surprised by this movie as it had the look of a “B movie” but the plot was actually well developed and Hawke and Dafoe played their roles brilliantly. Jay Laga’aia who played Captain Typho in Star Wars episodes II and III had a small part as a vampire senator who was also sympathetic to humans so having a Star Wars connection was also nice. The film does have some gore in it but to me, personally, it wasn’t over the top until the end which was a bit gory but otherwise I could stomach it and I’m not one for gory movies. One question I did have during the movie is how this “vicious plague” got started but that was never really discussed in any detail. We just know that the population began turning into vampires and then these vampires began turning other humans into vampires but that is all we know. There were similarities to “I Am Legend” but the overall story line appealed to me a bit more than the Will Smith movie but I don’t think this movie did as well as the box office.I also had the opportunity to see TRON: Legacy this week
I went to see TRON: Legacy today with a buddy of mine. We
almost went on Christmas day as they were having a late night showing at
10:30 but I was too dang tired. Now I should start off by saying that I did
not see the original Tron movie. I really wanted to see the original before
seeing this sequel but I haven't found a place I can get a copy of the movie
for a reasonable price. Its on Amazon and Ebay but for an arm and a leg.
Netflix doesn't have it and Disney's movie club doesn't seem to have it
either. |
